Oh My Gourd - Original 8x10in. Oil Painting

This vibrant still-life painting highlights the rich colors and textures of kabocha squash, capturing their deep green rind and golden-orange flesh. Painted during a painting class with the guidance of my friend and instructor, Pat Tucker, this piece was an exploration of light, shadow, and natural forms.

The contrasting hues create a sense of depth, while the arrangement of the sliced squash invites the viewer to appreciate the simple beauty of fresh produce. This piece celebrates the quiet elegance of everyday objects, brought to life with rich oil paints and thoughtful detail.

A kabocha squash (pronounced kah-BOH-cha) is a type of winter squash that originates from Japan, often called Japanese pumpkin and is prized for its sweet, nutty flavor and creamy texture. It tastes like a mix of sweet potato and pumpkin. It's a good source of fiber, beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C, and potassium.
